Farm

The yak farm is located at Nyukmadung at a distance of 31 km from Dirang township on a diversion of Tezpur-Tawang Highway at an altitude of 2750 metre above msl. The total number of animal sheds at the farm complex are 19 (Bull shed-01, Metabolic shed-01, Milking shed-02, Female shed-02, General Animal shed-05, Experimental Animal shed-01, Quarantine shed-02, Parturition shed-01 and Calf shed-04). The yak farm was started with only 4 number of yaks in the year 1993. At present, the farm is having 184 numbers of yaks (69 male and 115 female) out of which 34 were lactating and 35 pregnant yaks as on 31st March, 2011. A total of 44 calves (26 male and 18 female) were born during the period of April 2010 to March, 2011 out of which 10 were AI born calves. Highest birth weight of calf was recorded 18 Kg (Anim. No. 335) with an average birth weight of 13.34 Kg. Total milk production during the year was 7617.28 litres with the highest production during the month of October. The conception rate of female yaks by AI is 64 percent.

Fodder production

Certain varieties of quality fodder were selected for cultivation for effective fodder production depending upon the climatic condition during the summer and winter season. The fodder crops were cultivated accordingly and adequate quantity of quality fodder was produced from high yielding varieties of fodder crops of maize and oat. The production of fodder round the year is tabulated in Table below:

Yak Product Technology Unit
Milk Processing

The unit developed process technology for making different milk products like milk paneer, low fat paneer, churpi, churkam, enrobed paneer fingers, dahi, ghee, vegetable extended paneer and whey beverage etc.

Wool Processing

Choudhary charkha is used for making yarn from yak wool. Different woolen products like caps, carpets, belts, chammer (prepared from long hairs clipped from yak tail) were made by utilizing the yak hair. The unit generated a gross income of Rs. 10,240.00 through the sale of innovatively designed carpets, caps etc made from yak hair fibers.

Technical Cell

The technical cell is dealing with all technical matters and generating reports viz., Annual Report, News Letter etc. published from this Centre. This cell plans documents incorporating scientific and other information. Central xeroxing, still/digital photography, liquid crystal display system, overhead projector, slide projector, video photography facilities are available at this cell besides stand alone computer systems with colour laser printing facility. This cell is headed by one Scientist, who acts as In-charge.

ARIS Cell

The ARIS Cell has been established in the year 1998. Presently the cell is equipped with FTDMA VSAT having 256 Kbps bandwidth capacity through which the internet is being distributed to all important sections. This Cell is having four individual computer systems with color LaserJet, black and white laser, dotmatrix printing and scanning facilities. Decentralised computer systems with printing facilities as per the requirements (color laser, color deskjet, color inkjet, b/w laser, dot matrix etc.) have been provided to all the Scientists, Technical Officers, other administrative sections besides ARIS Cell and Director’s Cell. New internet connectivity is being provided through ERNET India, New Delhi in November, 2004.
